CLEAN Action Alert -- Allow the EPA to Do Its Job!
Tuesday, 08 June 2010 :00 AM
Dear Clean Activist:
As if the eco-disaster in the Gulf of Mexico (we refuse to call it an oil spill) and the mining disaster in West Virginia weren't enough, Senator Lisa Murkowski (Republican, Alaska) wants to neuter the power of the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA). She has introduced a resolution in the Senate that would severely curtail the power of the EPA to do its job.
We are not going to ask you to read a long action alert because we know that you know why the EPA is important and we want you to pick up the phone and call your Senate offices.
But if the appearance on television of devastated residents, fishermen who face the loss of livelihoods, and oil drenched birds doesn't get you angry enough, here are two factoids that you may have missed in the press:
The Senate co-sponsors of the Murkowski resolution have collectively accepted at least $1.8 million from the oil and gas industry for their campaigns.
According to the Washington Post, two Washington lobbyists who helped Murkowski write her bill held senior positions at the EPA under the Bush Administration. These men now work for DC lobbying firms that represent multiple oil and gas clients with energy interests before the Congress. Unfortunately Senate Democrats who have written the climate change legislation pending in the Senate have demonstrated that they too are under the influence of the fossil fuel industry given the large amount of money in the Senate bill for offshore oil drilling and carbon capture and sequestration of coal.
Please pick up the phone and ask your Senators to vote against Senator Murkowski's amendment to curtail the authority of the EPA! Click here to reach your Senator.
Thank you for taking action!
